Why Wedding Photography Quotes Vary So Much. What Really Goes Into the Price

You ask three photographers about the same date and get three completely different numbers. Sometimes the gap is several times over. And a fair question follows: if each of them will photograph your wedding, what exactly are you paying more for?

It's a good question. The answer rarely comes up directly, so here's how I explain it to the couples who write to me..

You're paying for far more than one day

When you look at a price, you see one day of shooting. But that day is often a third of the actual work.

The rest is invisible: the conversation before the wedding to get to know you and the plan, culling several thousand frames, editing every selected photo, preparing the gallery and delivering it. Good wedding photography is built on days of work that never show up on the invoice, but that decide how your photos look.

A photographer who only counts hours at the reception either skips the rest or does it in a hurry.

What actually makes up the price

A few things that cost money, even when nobody spells them out:

Experience and eye. A wedding has no second take. The first dance happens once. You're paying for the certainty that the person behind the camera knows where to stand and when to press the shutter, before the moment happens.

Equipment and backup. A professional shoots on two cameras, with spare cards and backups made the same evening. This isn't the place to cut corners, because your day can't be repeated.

The time after the wedding. Selecting and editing is the longest part of the work. This is where your photos get their character, not just correct exposure.

Delivery and image rights. A gallery, high-resolution files, clear terms of use. Obvious, until someone leaves them out.

Why the cheapest offer is often the most expensive

A low price has to come from somewhere. Usually it comes from time: less conversation before, less attention during, less work after. Or from experience that isn't there yet.

The problem is that wedding photography can't be fixed after the fact. If the moment is gone or the photos came out flat, there's no reshoot. Couples who choose the cheapest option often pay twice. The second time for a session meant to replace what the wedding itself didn't capture.

It's not about taking as many photos as possible. It's about photos where you look like yourselves, not like a couple posing for the frame. Every frame is chosen and finished deliberately.
